Essential Beginner Accessories
When buying your first SLR camera, you will undoubtedly feel the pinch of spending that couple of hundred dollars, and would to keep the photography spending on hold before you lash out again.
Although this is an understandable thing to do, there are various accessories you need to consider before buying anything else. But what on earth could these extras be?
Well, firstly you need to protect your investment. No matter how safe you think your daily backpack may be it hasn’t really been designed to pad your SLR from the occasional knocks and blows. A sensible alternative will be a proper SLR camera bag. But why would you even want to spend money on a carrying case?
- They are designed to accommodate SLR cameras and often come with extra padding so your camera will fit right in without shaking about in the bag
- The carrying cases also come with extra compartments to store your other photography bits and pieces like memory cards, filter lenses, batteries, charges and perhaps even a small lens.
- When deciding to go ahead and take photos, all you actually need is to that case. You won’t have to empty out your backpack and throw the stuff in there every time, you carry case will be ready to go whenever you are.
- No worries – having your expensive SLR in that back pack of yours will arouse unconscious thoughts such as; is my camera okay? Should I handle it with more care? And other similar notions
- It also give am impression to others you go the full mile, you’re ready to buy whatever is needed and you don’t cut corners.
So, having said all that you can go and buy yourself a decent case, it doesn’t have to be ridiculously hi-tech or have some sort of intruder alarm of any kind. Remember, if your camera gets broken because of your carelessness this is likely to void your warranty – they won’t fix it if you broke your screen, and screens don’t break themselves.
Moving on to the next essential accessory for the new photographer.
Well, this next one probably won’t be an essential for everyone, but the benefits certainly outweigh the price and really should be considered when purchasing the SLR camera.
No one wants fingerprints or dust to gather up on their lens and it’s vital that they are kept clean all the time so your pictures come out perfectly. The easiest way to protect your lens is to buy a filter.
There are many filters out there, but the one you want to use to protect your lens is the UV filter. It is simply a clear piece of glass you screw onto the end of your lens and it keeps out the dust and everything else that may ruin your picture. In fact, with this UV filter screwed on, it also enhances your pictures in sunlight as it filters out the UV rays, hence it’s name, UV filter.
The filter shouldn’t really cost more than $15-25 or £10-20, but then again that depends where you buy it from. The cheapest place to buy it from is eBay, and we mentioned in our previous post that buying these types of accessories from eBay isn’t a problem. On the other hand, if you want to go down to a large photography retailer, you can be sure to pay more.
In conclusion, those are the main extras you need to get with your camera to keep it safe and sound. Oh, and if you were thinking memory cards, well most cameras can’t take pictures without memory cards anyway so there’s no choice in buying that!
