Choosing The Right Photo Editor

Submitted by Visual Forgery on Saturday, 30 August 2008No Comment

There are loads of photo editing software out there, and you’re probably going to get some with your SLR camera, but they are usually very basic and are not capable of advanced photo and image modifications. You might be able to crop, adjust colour here and there, rotate/transform etc. On the other hand, other software like Adobe’s Photoshop can pretty much handle anything you throw at it, BUT you need to know how to use it properly

To decide on photo editors, you should try out a couple. It also depends on the type of things you want to do with your photo’s. As a beginner though, you should really be concentrating on taking good photos rather than modifying them with software. After all, the best photos are those that don’t need any ‘after effects’ and look great right after the shot.

So, if you decide to go with Adobe’s Photoshop, and the endless menu items don’t intimidate you, then I suggest you should get ready to take in quite a bit of info and learn how to use software. Everyone knows that trying to become familiar with this software takes some time, so you can find a lot of video tutorials on the internet to assist your learning.

If you have come to the point where you want to begin to eidt your photo’s, then you should download a trial of Photoshop, install it and play around with it. Experiment on what the different features do, also research into the program’s demo on Adobe’s website.

So enough about Photoshop. There is also quite a few contributions by Corel. Corel is well known for their DTP software, CorelDraw and Paint Shop Pro. A brief overview taken from their website for their X2 version:

This digital photography toolkit is the ideal choice for any aspiring photographer, making it easy to process, edit, enhance and create professional-quality photos. Instantly fix common flaws with just one-click. Get creative with artistic effects and filters. Plus, explore a full range of advanced editing tools to get the exact look you want. Once you’ve created the perfect photo, choose from a variety of fun projects to share them with family & friends.

  • Use advanced editing tools to fine-tune images on your own
  • Download pictures from your camera automatically
  • Instantly fix common problems such as red eye, color and sharpness
  • Add special effects to photos, text and projects with a few simple clicks

But of course, all photo editting software can do the above, that’s why you need to take them all for a test drive. Photo editting software doesn’t come cheap either, so you’ll want to make the right choice – that’s also why you get free trials.

What sort of things would you want to do with a photo editing software anyway?

Well, you could probably do anything you want if you’re a pro. But if you’re not, likeĀ  the majority of us, then you may intend to modify certain areas of your photo’s, give it a new colour altogether or completely change it’s appearance. You will also be able to adding features and take some away. But as I said earlier, it all takes time, You won’t be able to edit a picture completely or fully. As time goes on, you’ll become familar with what your software can do, and begin to utilise all it’s features and facilities.

It doesn’t stop there though. You can also make graphics and other illustrations with these photo editting software too, you know, why not become a bit of a graphic designer too?!
